The cornelian cherry, a member of the dogwood family, is native to Europe from France to Ukraine. It is grown in the UK for its bright yellow flowers in winter/early spring and for its Autumn leaf colours.

It produces reddish cherry-like fruit that are edible, if somewhat astringent. Used in Chinese traditional medicine and widely eaten in Iran where they are also believed to have medicinal properties.
