Part of the Templeton trail – cultivated at Cranmore April 1819
A small tree originally from W and SW Iran, probably introduced in the 16th century. Award of Garden Merit in 1984. The heart shaded leaves are rough above and downy below, the edible fruit is blackish-red. This is not the mulberry used as food for silkworms which is Morus alba, the white mulberry.
Planted in the Botanic Gardens on 20th February 2024 to mark the retirement of horticulturalist Archie Parke after 50 years of service with Belfast City Council.
