The 'Friends
of Belfast Botanic Gardens' group (FOBBG) is a registered charity
The charitable objects of the Friends Group
- a. to provide a forum for all those interested in the welfare of Belfast Botanic Gardens;
- b. to advance the knowledge of botany, horticulture and the horticultural legacy of Belfast Botanic Gardens for the public benefit and to promote the Gardens as a centre for horticultural excellence, botanical education and public amenity;
- c. to promote, or assist in promoting, the conservation, maintenance and development of Belfast Botanic Gardens and the buildings and monuments therein;
- d. to enhance or assist in the enhancement of the scientific value of the plant collections in Belfast Botanic Gardens, both in the gardens and under glass, and to support the environmental worth of the gardens as a habitat for wildlife in the City of Belfast;
- e. to support the value and unique standing of Belfast Botanic Gardens by providing or helping to provide equipment, plants and other materials or facilities in line with our charitable aims;
- f. doing all other such things as are necessary or conducive to the attainment of the above objects, including:
- i. to obtain grants or procure the funding from any source for the purpose of the Company and to comply with the terms subject to which such grants are made available;
- ii. to co-operate with Belfast City Council (BCC) to enable the company to further its objects, whether through fund raising activities, assisting with events or providing advice to visitors;
- iii. to accept subscriptions, donations, devises and bequests of any
real or personal property and any rights or privileges necessary for promotion of the Company's objects;
- iv. to issue appeals, hold public meetings, organise public events
and take such other steps as may be required for the purpose of furthering its objects or securing contributions to the Company and to encourage the involvement of individuals and organisations of all kinds in the activities of the Company generally.
Major improvements which the 'Friends of Belfast Botanic Gardens' group have been involved in:
- Restoration of the Tropical Ravine which reopened in 2018 and for which the Friends group donated £20,000
- Development of a Global Medicine Garden, in collaboration with Belfast City Council, beside the Tropical Ravine
- Labelling of the Tree collection and development of an on-line database of trees in the gardens
Major improvements which the 'Friends of Belfast Botanic Gardens" group would like to see
- Enhancement of signage and information points within the gardens
- Restoration of the Kelvin Memorial
- Restoration of the Palm House
- Redevelopment of the lower Botanic Gardens as an area for trial beds, horticultural education and community engagement
- Restoration of the Shelter
- Restoration and enhancement of the Pinetum
- Enhancement of existing entrances
- Boundary improvements and screening of intrusive buildings, refurbishment of shrub beds
- Reintroduction of Garden furniture
- Provision of Victorian Street Lighting
- Refurbishment of toilets
